The Fergus Curling Club's Curl for the Cure has officially changed its name to "Curl for a Cause" - but what hasn't changed is the club's desire to help local causes and make life better for people in the community.
Curl for the Cause is a fundraising bonspiel held at the Fergus Curling Club that includes a silent auction component, sponsored t-shirts, and this year, a sponsored event program.
Once again this year, the club has decided to give to six local charities: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington, Community Living, the Centre Wellington Food Bank, KidsAbility, the Door, and Women in Crisis.
Curl for a Cause has been operating for six years and has been well-received by the community - donating in total $144,591.
In its first year, the club gave $12,786 to the Canadian Cancer Society; in the second year, the $16,216 raised was split between the society and the Oncology Unit at Groves Hospital.
In the third, fourth and fifth years, the fundraising event brought in $27,770, $26,175 and $30,248 - all going to the Oncology unit. Last year, giving to six charities, the event raised $31,486.
This year's Curl for a Cause will take place Saturday, March 24. Fergus Curling Club members are looking for sponsors, curlers, and silent auction items.
