Celebrating local history
Parks Canada helps restore significant historic building
Federal, provincial and local politicians gathered last week to celebrate the history of the Elora Drill Shed - and Parks Canada's help in its restoration. The roughly $70,000 Parks Canada grant paid half a $140,000 project to repoint the building's masonry, repair the front doors and do other restoration work on the national historic site.
Now the home of the Elora LCBO, the building sits atop a new landscaped stone wall and garden created as part of the reconstruction of Metcalfe Street over the past two years - a project jointly funded by Wellington County and the federal-provincial infrastructure stimulus.
The two projects have made the building a beautiful gateway to Elora, said Elora LCBO manager Paul Walker.
OPP offer reward in resolution of homicide case
The Ontario Provincial Police is now offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to identification of female human remains found five years ago near Guelph. The OPP investigators on this case are treating the circumstances of the victim’s death as suspicious and consider that foul play was involved.
Members of the OPP Unsolved Homicide Investigations Team (UHIT) and Missing Persons Unidentified Bodies Unit (MPUB), along with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, are confident that a reward will also lead to the apprehension of her killer.
On August 28, 2005, the remains of a white female, approximately 25-45 years old, approximately five-foot-six-inches tall, weighing about 130 pounds with light brown hair, were found in a wooded location at a picnic/rest area on Highway 7, west of Rockwood.
Sunny skies draw 160 entries, crowds
Maybe it was the sunshine, the hot weather, the last weekend of summer before September… or maybe a combination of all three.
Almost twice as many cars took part in this year's 35th annual Wellington County Museum Antique and Classic Car Show Sunday afternoon as last year's show. By 2 p.m. when cars were still occasionally trickling into the grounds, organizers had registered 160 vehicles. Last year about 90 showed up.
"This is excellent," museum activity programmer Libby Walker said. "We had more cars than ever before in the parade and more than ever before here."
