Police investigate business fire
A structure fire in the former Eramosa township has resulted in a criminal investigation.
The OPP and Ontario Fire Marshal are looking into the cause of a fire which destroyed the contents of a wood pallet business in the former Eramosa townsihp in Centre Wellington. Damage is estimated at between $250,000 and $300,000.
Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue were called to 5933 Third Line in former Eramosa on Aug. 7 at about 11:40 a.m., to find a quonset hut housing the business fully engulfed in flames. The hut was surrounded by other buildings on a farm, and firefighters acted quickly to contain the fire while protecting the surrounding structures, District Fire Chief Tom Mulvey said.
Township second in power pledge
Centre Wellington residents are big on pledging to reduce power.
The township came second out of 190 communities across the province taking part in the Power Pledge Campaign run by the Ontario Power Authority.
A total of 1,210 residents signed up and took a pledge to reduce their power consumption by specific means like turning off computers, TVs and electronics when not in use, replacing energy-wasteful appliances, or doing a home audit.
Pledges were rated on a per capita basis, said Centre Wellington Hydro's Nishin Nathwani, who spearheaded the pledge program in Centre Wellington.
Viewing pavilion opens at Terrace
Residents at Wellington Terrace can enjoy a pond, woods, and wildflower landscape at the home for the aged, thanks to a large new covered pavilion.
Just completed last Thursday, the structure was officially opened with a ribbon cutting by volunteers from the Second Time Around.
Terrace administrator Peter Barnes said residents were enjoying going out to watch the swans - the first one, from the Elora Swan Project was brought out a year ago.
"There was really no place for residents to get out of the elements, so we decided to build a shelter," Barnes said.
A $50,000 donation from the Second Time Around in Elora, a volunteer-run second-hand store that fundraises specifically for the Terrace, plus donations from Terrace family and bequests covered the cost.
