Despite the lopsided final score, anybody who witnessed the Drayton-Elora contest on Friday, Dec. 4, might have been going on the assumption that the Rocks attention was elsewhere.
After a sloppy opening 10 minutes, Elora finally got on track but didn't put Icemen away until the third period. Rocks head coach Kevin Lobsinger didn't think his team was looking ahead to their Saturday night date with the Shelburne Muskies - rather, he thought they might have been looking at the standings.
"I think we might have had a few guys sneaking a peak at the standings and they saw where we were and where Drayton was," he said. "We can't take any games off or even a period off because nobody is going to take one off against us. If we play like we're dead from the ass up, we're going to get killed by teams like Shelburne."
A 3-2 overtime win over the Muskies proved the Rocks weren't dead at all, but Lobsinger is hoping that his team will remember what it was that makes them successful. Having played the weekend short a few players, he also pointed out that other players are more than willing to step up and do whatever is asked of them to keep the team's success an ongoing thing.
Jeremy O'Donnell added his thoughts on the season following Elora's win over Drayton, talking about the need to safeguard against bad habits setting in against the weaker competition.
"There were times against Drayton tonight that we didn't make the smart play - we got to their blue line and turned it over trying to do too much rather than just dump it in and go get it," he said. "If we're playing that way when we go into a place like Shelburne or Port Elgin, we can wind up behind pretty quickly and find ourselves in some trouble."
