Jobb, Cunningham named to GBMO all-star squad
The Fergus Devils dropped two more games last weekend, dropping them back into seventh place in the league standings.
There was one ray of hope over the weekend, as they took the Alliston Hornets into overtime before falling 6-5 to the defending league champs. A night later, they saw the Stayner Siskins blow past them in the third period for a 6-3 win.
At Alliston, the Devils found a way to stay with the champs for three straight periods and even hold a third-period lead before the Hornets took charge for good. Dylan Cunningham and Rob Turner had goals in the first while Brock West and Cunningham scored for Fergus in the second. The game was tied 4-4 early in the third when Mitch Gelfand gave the Devils a 5-4 lead on a powerplay goal. The lead lasted less than eight minutes, as Randy Cox tied the game up at 8:18 with Cole Giles in the penalty box.
Cox finished the Devils off quick in overtime, scoring on a setup from Kyle McDowell while Gelfand finished serving a cross-checking penalty hear earned late in the third period.
Ethan Jobb (3), Shane Reinhart, Ben Piluk and West added assists, while Brendan Moore made 37 saves on 43 shots in taking the loss. Breton MacKinnon earned the win, stopping 17 of 18 shots in relief of Brandon Motz (18/22).
In Stayner for Halloween, the Devils couldn't pull off a trick for the second straight night and fell to the first-place Siskins. After trailing 1-0 at the first intermission, Fergus got goals from Cunningham and Sean Little to hold a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
The third period turned into a shootout, and the Siskins had more ammo at their dispoasl. They scored twice in the first eight-plus minutes of the period to take back the lead before Branden Bauer tied the score at 3-3 with 8:46 to play. Stayner then put three goals on the board in a little more than 6:30 of play, putting the game well out of reach for the Devils.
West and Reinhart added assists in the loss, while Moore made 38 saves on 44 shots. Gary Walser earned the win over his former club, stopping 25 of 28 pucks.
It wasn't all bad news for the Devils last week, as the Georgian Bay Mid-Ontario named their league all-star team for the upcoming All-Star game against the Western Junior 'C' league. Cunningham, Jobb and injured goalie Rob Rankin were named to the club, while Gelfand was selected as an alternate defenceman.
The game will be played in Mount Forest on Sunday, November 22, at 2 p.m., and the winning league will be awarded home-ice advantage for their OHA quarter-final series in this spring's provincial playoffs.
